During Super Bowl LIX week in New Orleans, one of the most meaningful and mission-driven gatherings took place at the 20th Annual Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Salute to Excellence Awards, hosted by the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation. The luncheon, named in honor of the legendary civil rights attorney, spotlighted leaders in sports who are advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across all levels of the game.

This year’s celebration marked two decades of advocacy, action, and achievement, bringing together some of the most influential voices in sports. A powerful panel discussion, “Female Trailblazers: Women Who Are Driving the Sports Industry,” was a highlight of the program. Moderated by Dasha Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the NFL, the conversation amplified the voices of women who are not only making space—but changing the game entirely.

In a moment of distinction, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the attendees, recognizing the ongoing work toward a more equitable league. Among those honored was Jeffrey Pash, the NFL’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, who received the Dan M. Rooney Lifetime Achievement Award for his steadfast commitment to building a more inclusive workplace across professional football.
Also recognized was Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, who accepted the Salute to Excellence Award on behalf of the organization for its deep-rooted community impact and unwavering dedication to diversity.

Set against the backdrop of Super Bowl excitement, this event reminded all in attendance that the true legacy of sports is built not just on victories, but on values, leadership, and the pursuit of justice—on and off the field.
